Please note that savestrol products do not contain naringenin, a compound commonly found in grapefruit, which may interact with several CYP enzymes and could therefore interfere with some drug therapies. Resveratrol should be avoided while taking salvestrols.

Salvestrols are plant derived compounds (phytonutrients) that are traditionally (naturally) high in many red or green plants, including fruits, berries, and herbs. However, modern agriculture has minimized the levels of salvestrols through a combination of the development of modern plant varieties, use of antifungal sprays and the selective processing of harvested fruit. Most Salvestrols also have a sharp or bitter taste and are processed to be removed to suit modern preference for sweet foods.

Salvestrols were discovered by UK scientists led by Gerry Potter (Professor of Medicinal Chemistry) and Dan Burke (Emeritus Professor of Pharmaceutical Metabolism and former head of the School of Pharmacy). They are a new class of natural chemicals that can be safely eaten in the diet. Salvestrols were found to undergo a process of molecular activation inside cancer cells -- and only in cancer cells -- by a special enzyme protein, CYP1B1, that causes the cells to cease growth or die. In the early 1990's Professor Burke's research group found that CYP1B1 was expressed at a high frequency in a wide range of human cancers of different histogenetic types, including cancers of the breast, colon, lung, esophagus, skin, lymph node, brain, and testis, but undetectable in normal cells in corresponding healthy tissues.(Reference 1) Therefore, salvestrol, a natural dietary cancer preventative agent, can be converted into a compound with known anticancer activity by an enzyme that is found in human tumors. (Reference 2)

The levels of Salvestrols in a typical "5 portion a day" basket of non-organic fruit and vegetables from a supermarket have been measured and found to contain only 10% of the estimated daily dietary requirement. So eating adequate amounts of commercially available fruit and vegetables will not provide the essential nutrients the body needs.
